Patterdale: A High Street Horseshoe

A day of full panoramic views, ticking off 7 Wainwrights. This is an exciting walk with big views, but never feeling exposed. Starting at the Patterdale Hotel, it has a a short warm-up of the legs before heading up the nose of Hartsopp Dodd. It descends to the pass of Threshthwaite Mouth before rising back up to High Street. The return leg passes by Angle Tarn before returning to Patterdale from Boredale Hause.

Route notes:

1.       Start: From the Patterdale Hotel, head south on the A592 for 2 miles until reaching the junction to Hartsopp.

2.     2.0 miles: Leave the A592, following the signs for Hartsopp. Follow the lane up to the car park.

3.    2.4 miles: Turn right and follow the footpath over the stream, and directly up to the spur of Hartsopp Dodd.

4.     2.7 miles: When arriving at the spur, the small sheep track continues directly uphill to the summit of Hartsopp Dodd. From here it continues, adjacent to the drystone wall, until reaching Stony Cove Pike.

5.     5.3 miles: From Stony Cove Pike, turn left, and descend to Threshthwaite Mouth before climbing up the shale path to Thornthwaite Crag.

6.     6.4 miles: From Thornthwaite Crag, the path bears left and follows the gradual slope to High Street. Continue onwards, passing over the Straights of Riggindale, and when the path forks take the left: descending to The Knott.

7.     8.5 miles: From the Knott, continue on the path gradually descending to Satura Crags. If wished, a quick there-and-back to the Wainwright of Brock Crags is included in this guide. This then continues to Angle Tarn.

8.     10.8 miles: Follow the path around the Eastern shores of Angle Tarn, before nipping up to bag Angletarn Pikes. The path then continues descending to the cross-roads of Boredale Hause.

9.     12.3 miles: When arriving at Boredale Hause, turn West towards Patterdale. The path forks into two: take the right hand lane, and follow the rocky lane down to a series of cottages. Pass through the cottages and join a tarmac lane.

10.     13.0 miles: Follow the tarmac lane back to the A592. Cross the road and wait on the other side for the bus return back to Glenridding and on to Penrith.
